When you are learning any couples’ dance, you should be learning the details that are required to make each pattern/move comfortable and easy to execute. Correct body positioning, including the amount of rotation for each movement; foot placement and weight changes as they relate to each number in the pattern; correct hand holds, including exactly how the hands roll in turns and keeping connection; learning and using correct terminology, including the correct name for each move.
All of this is and more is technique and this is what you should be learning not only in private lessons but also in group classes. If you are not, then you are not learning the fundamental of the dance, you are only learning patterns.
